Viroqua School District Administrator Robert Knadle said he is still hopeful that an agreement can be reached between the YMCA of La Crosse and the district to operate the Bigley Pool.

"I am very hopeful that we will have something to bring to the board by the May school board meeting (Monday, May 19)," said Knadle.

Knadle met with YMCA management, Tuesday, April 29, to discuss a potential agreement to run the facility and said there still is a possibility that the facility will be open for summer programs.

"That is a real possibility," said Knadle.

Knadle did not want to get into details of how that would happen, but said there could be a temporary arrangement while the long-term agreement is worked out.

"They were very optimistic, but they want to get some more information about our community," said Knadle.

There will be a survey sent out in the coming weeks that is designed to gather information about what kinds of services the YMCA could offer the community.

"There was some talk about before-school and after-school programs and other youth programming they could provide," said Knadle. "We are still working through what they would need from us and what we would need from them and the idea would be that they would be utilized to administer the pool for us."

The pool was opened in 2003. It was built by donations largely from the James P. Bigley Foundation. One year after it opened, the Viroqua municipal outdoor pool closed due to leaking water, leaving the Bigley Pool as the only pool in Viroqua. The pool has been managed over the last five years by Vernon Memorial Healthcare. Keeping the pool open has been a delicate issue, as VMH announced last year the pool was operating at about a $200,000 deficit per year. VMH's contract to manage the pool expired on Dec. 31, 2007, but VMH has committed itself to handle pool operations until the end of May.

"We have nothing but compliments for VMH and what they have been able to do with the pool," Knadle said.

Knadle said the pool's financial shortfalls were "not caused by anything" in particular. He said that the school district alone cannot pay for the pool to be fully operational.

In other business, the Viroqua School Board held it organizational meeting on Monday, April 28, and elected some new officers.

Mike Skildum was elected as the school board president, he replaces Phil Solverson, who retired from the board at the end of the last term.

Also elected to board officer positions were Angie Lawrence as vice-president, Robert Nigh as clerk and Sarah Johnson as treasurer. Elected as CESA No. 4 representative and delegate was Scott Mills. Vicki Koppa was elected as an alternative CESA delegate.

The board approved naming the new building that will be constructed as part of the new outdoor sports facilities. The building that will house media booths, bathrooms and concession areas will be named the "James P. Bigley Pavilion." There also be a plaque placed in a prominent location at the field on a rock that will state "Donation made by Vernon Memorial Healthcare."

Responses a Sad Testament to Community Compassion wrote on May 14, 2008 1:24 PM:

" It's sad how people are so quick to be rude and insulting when they don't know the facts, but are only looking out for themselves. Not everyone wants to support other people's recreation, but can be sensitive and compassionate when their elderly neighbors are having a tough time surviving, even when they themselves are not.

I personally find it hard to accept the fact that some people are so callous and have no idea what others have gone through; through no fault of their own. I know people who have worked hard their entire lives, made the right choices and then life and circumstances put them in a very bad position. Let's hope you never get old or never get sick with a debilitating disease and have your insurance refuse to pay (illegally refuse to pay) or have several of your family members hurt when their vehicle is hit by a drunk driver. How about working your tail off for a company for 30 long years and right before you can retire and get the retirement you have paid in on all those years is taken from you. Of course, you think that only happens to other people and that they made THOSE choices. I guess it's hard for those who care only about themselves to have any compassion for others or see beyond their present comfort. "

" Hwy 14/61 runs north and south. Take your pick. If you had listened to your Mom when she told you to get an EDUCATION then you could afford what your minimal paying job can't. We all have choices. Unfortunately you must have made a bad one. "

" Let's hit the taxpayers up again for things that only a few residents are going to us. Some people can't even get to work at times in winter because of un- cleared, impassable roads and if there was an emergency, people would just be out of luck; but we'll have a pool. The fact that grocery prices are raising exponentially and gasoline prices are climbing at an alarming rate shouldn't alarm anyone. Neither should the fact that one of the local propane companies is charging approx. $1.00 (about a 60% increase) more a gallon for propane then was charged a few short months ago. Those that prepaid last year, if the rates don't go down.. and the rates may actually go up.. may not be able to afford heat this winter. To put it in dollars and cents...if they paid $1000 for prepay, they will now pay $1600. Where is that almost $600 supposed to come from? The so-called stimulus package has already been swallowed up by increased prices in other areas.

But this shouldn't bother anyone... not as long as a few get their recreation paid for by others. This really is an oppressive tax and spend place to live, starting at the state level and filtering down to local governments. A place that some will have to leave because they can no longer afford to live here. "

" What the City of Viroqua does with the money that used to go for operation of the outdoor pool.. Seems like a City of this size should
be providing swimming as a recreation activity for its residents. "
