Gas costs too much? Don’t drive so far; Food costs too much? Grow your own...

I have read lately about the general public's consensus that it's the duty of our government to bring down the gas prices.

Is there anyone else on the planet who disagrees?

I drive 45 minutes to work in the morning and one hour home at night. Why? I promised my son he can graduate from Westby.

Thereafter, surely I will have enough sense to move into a home near my job where I can walk or bike instead. In the meantime, I'd welcome anyone interested in carpooling as I had when I traveled to Sparta for years. I do spend 15 percent of my income on travel to work.

"But I live way out in the country," you say. Well, move closer to your job, why don't you? The Amish could care less about the gas prices as their horse-and-buggy travel suits them just fine. The oil industry can charge whatever we are willing to pay for fuel. I am fortunate that my tiny car gets 33 miles per gallon. When it's time for me to buy are placement, I sure won't be shopping among the gas-guzzling SUVs, but you will find me in a foreign vehicle that gets 50 to 70 mpg.

I'd like to buy American, so hopefully that will be possible.

I remember when scientists toyed with the idea of supplementing gas with corn. Is that still a possibility? I'd like to see a car that runs on grass clippings, wood chips, or fresh milk. Would someone consider inventing transportation fueled by a readily renewable resource?

The hotel industry can charge $100 per night because many people will pay it. Not me, I'll sleep in my car first or pitch a tent. At $300 per room, perhaps more people would join me. So, the same principles of economics apply to gas. When we stop buying it, the gas companies will cease and desist by bringing the price down to what the consumer will willingly pay.

Oh, "But it affects the cost of groceries due to the increased shipping charges." Of course it does. Plant a garden, eat less and buy locally from your neighbor's field. I would just like to say, "quit your belly-aching" to the average worker bee. And to Congress — "stay out of the price-fixing business -— it's not your problem."
