Vandals deface, topple markers at Viroqua Cemetery

Viroqua Cemetery was vandalized either late Sunday night or early Monday morning.

The vandals toppled markers, some weighing more than 1,000 pounds. They also spray-painted graffiti and symbols of hate on at least two markers. The most egregious damage was done to the cemetery’s largest marker for former Wisconsin Gov. Jeremiah Rusk. The vandals spray-painted graffiti on all four sides of the Rusk marker.

“I my 30 years of working here, I’ve never seen any vandalism this bad,” Clair Morrison, who has been a long-time caretaker at the cemetery, said. “There’s no sense to it. I can’t see what anyone would get out of it.”

A quick inspection of the cemetery found that two large markers had been knocked over, several small markers had been moved our taken out of the ground and then put back upside down. Also, some flags that had been placed by veteran’s graves for Memorial Day were taken out of the ground and reinserted upside down.

A marker for one couple, who passed away more than a decade ago, was spray painted with the works “Its dead get over it” on the front while there was a swastika painted on the back. Cemetery workers and the Viroqua Police Department were going through the cemetery trying to determine all of the damage that had been done on Monday morning.

Late Sunday afternoon, the cemetery hosted the Viroqua Historical Society’s Cemetery Walk, where about 40 people toured the cemetery while volunteers told stories about the history of residents buried there. None of the damage was in the cemetery during the tour.

The Viroqua Police Department is investigating and Kevin Morrison, the head caretaker at the cemetery, has been in contact with Crimestoppers officials. Anyone with information on this crime is urged to call the Viroqua Police Department at 637-2121.

" My grandparents and parents are buried in the Viroqua cemetary and I feel sad to think of some thoughtless people doing anything like this to this beautiful place.
Every time I visit Viroqua, it is a special place for me to see once again.
I just hope you catch these worthless individuals.

" To the desecration comment. Do you have someone you love buried? Is it just a stone to you? How Cold! My fathers stone was one that was vandalized. He has only been gone for 10 months. On his stone were the names of his wife, his children and his grandchildren, things that marked who he was. It is not just a stone, it is symbol of a man who lived and loved. How dare you say otherwise! As far as society, it is comment like yours that make people think that this is ok to do and that we should "just get over it" Someone whose parents have taught them respect and love would NEVER consider violating such sacred grounds. I hope that the vandals are caught and that they are given strict punishement. Something beyond just cleaning headstones! "

" How arrogant of you to tell us what YOU think justifies our feelings and what does not. You also read a lot in to the fact who we think were "harmed." Whether a loved one has passed on or not, does not change the fact that we wish to treat their memory with respect, something you apparently just "don't get." Just maybe we don't want to "get over the fact" that these headstones are symbolic to many of us especially by someone such as yourself who appears to be insensitive that other people may feel differently than they do. We are not telling you to feel the same way that we do. If you don't care if your friends and families final resting places are vandalized, that's your business, but personally, I find it a very offensive crime to desecrate the markers of the final resting place of ANYONE's family, including yours. What was the vandals purpose in doing this, other than to cause hurt and harm? Maybe you have some "flip" answer for that too.... "

" I totally agree with the punishments being listed, but I especially love the sign idea! I think we should do that more often for crimes of stupidity and ignorance like this. "

" They're headstones; nothing to do with the dead - more to do with the living actually. It's all in your mindset nurtured by custom. You'll need to get over that small fact first before you begin to disassociate mere vandalism with adversely effecting the dead. Id almost bet a nickel that if you could wake those who are dead, one of the last things on their minds would be the graffiti on their headstones.
If you really want to harbor animosity about the desecration of the dead, look no farther than todays society and how we justify digging up the dead for advancement or our enlightened way of life. You can contact the Wisconsin Historical Societies Burial Sites Preservation Board for more information on that. Justification for your sadness and anger would then be in order. "

Punishment Should Fit the Crime wrote on Jun 3, 2008 3:27 PM:

" How about in addition to cleaning off every stone and paying all restitution needed, how about making the perpetrators wear signs saying that they are cowards and vandalized a community cemetery? "

" the people who did this are weak & pathetic. picking on the dead is even lower than kicking a dog or pushing down a baby.

at least i get some amount of satisfaction in knowing they're now wondering, minute after minute ... day after day ... when they'll be caught. because they will be caught. they're "proud" of what they've done & couldn't wait to let it slip out.

once caught, and for the rest of their lives, they'll be painted & scarred, just like those stones. not only those directly effected, but everyone in the community will know & remember who they are. "

" Well I would have to say that when these DIRT BALLS are caught they should be taken to a public place and give 10 lashes each... "

So Sad wrote on Jun 2, 2008 12:10 PM:

" Very sorry to hear of this destruction! When caught, I think they should have to be the ones to take care of the cemetary....Maybe clean EVERY stone. Heck, how about all the stones in the surrounding area? "
