Cemetery vandalism investigated

A cash reward has been offered for information on the vandals who toppled or spray-painted graffiti on about 40 markers at the Viroqua Cemetery sometime before Monday morning.

Some of the 20 overturned markers weighed more than 1,000 pounds. Another 20 were spray painted, some with hate symbols.

The most egregious damage was to the cemetery’s largest marker for former Wisconsin Gov. Jeremiah Rusk, which had graffiti on all four sides.

“In my 30 years of working here, I’ve never seen any vandalism this bad,” said Clair Morrison, a long-time caretaker at the cemetery. “There’s no sense to it. I can’t see what anyone would get out of it.”

Several small markers had been moved or taken out of the ground and then put back upside down. Also, some flags that had been placed by veterans’ graves for Memorial Day were taken out of the ground and reinserted upside down.

A marker for one couple, who died more than three decades ago, was spray painted with the words, “Its dead get over it,” on the front and a swastika on the back.

Viroqua Police Chief Mark Rahr said Tuesday that his department was following a handful of leads. He urged anyone with information to call the department at (608) 637-2121. He said the Crime Stopper’s offer of a cash reward was a significant boost to the investigation.

Vernon County Crime Stoppers also has offered up to $1,000 in cash for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible. Crime Stoppers can be reached at (608) 637-8477 or 1-800-657-6868, or on its Web site at www.vernon crimestoppers.com. Those with information can remain anonymous, officials said.

The cemetery hosted Sunday afternoon the Viroqua Historical Society’s Cemetery Walk, a tour that drew about 40 people while volunteers told stories about the history of residents buried there. The cemetery was undamaged at that point.

" To the losers who did the damage, no worries, it all comes out in the wash. Good luck to you, you'll need it... "

" There are many of us, whom, although we did not suffer personally because of these acts of vandalism; we do have a pretty good idea of how it must feel to those who did. This type of crime hurts our whole community when we feel that there are those type of callous human beings out there who attempt to hurt other people. I will say, however, that they must live in their own private hell, one of their own making. They also have no power to take away the honor, respect, and the great memories you have of your loved ones. This is something that they must not ever have experienced themselves if they committed these acts, nor will they if they continue down this path. How sad. "

" I can't believe that anyone could be so cold hearted as to do something like this. I have family and friends who were laid to rest in this cemetary and one of them was hit by this grafiti. All I can say is they are lucky that I didn't catch them doing this. I hope that they are caught and get a suitable punishment. "

" This sort of thing isn't good reading for those of us who live away from Viroqua and check this web site for hometown news. I have friends resting in the Viroqua Cemetery and in cemeteries in other cities in Wisconsin but I'd rather have people leave their anger in a cemetery instead of a school hallway or out on the highway.

What's going to become of the people responsible for causing that much anger and allowing it to fester before exploding? As usual, nothing! "

" Personally knowing one of the stones that were vandalized I am angry. First there was shock then sickened and now I am just plain angry. How can anybody be so cold hearted as to go into such a sacred place and do such a thing. My father was buried 10 months ago and it was almost like losing him again. What we made to be a beautiful resting place for him was violated and I hope that the vandals are caught and brought to the fullest extent of the law. There is not a sentence long enough to satisfy the anger the I and my family feels. As i am sure with all the familys that were affected! "

" THAT IS TERRIBLE!
WHY WOULD SOMEONE DO THAT? "
