A Viroqua woman walking across Hwy. 35 in the town of Bergen sustained head and leg injuries when she was struck by a vehicle on Hwy. 35, Wednesday.

According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department, Karen M. Winchel, 51, was attempting to cross the highway near the “Shady Maple” rest area north of Stoddard at 11 a.m. Winchel was struck by a northbound vehicle driven by Darol M. Boldt, 80, Prairie du Chien.

Boldt’s vehicle was nearly stopped when it struck Winchel, according to the sheriff’s department.

Winchel, whose injuries were deemed not life-threatening, was transported to Franciscan-Skemp Healthcare in La Crosse by Tri-State Ambulance.

The accident remains under investigation.
