Gays Mills man, 22, dies in one-car accident

A 22-year-old man died after being ejected from his car in an accident early Saturday morning in Gays Mills.

Justin J. Peterson of Gays Mills lost control of his car while driving east on Hwy. 171 near Stevenson Road, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department. The vehicle crossed the centerline, struck a guardrail, crossed the centerline again, then struck an embankment before rolling several times and coming to rest on its wheels.

Peterson, a De Soto High School graduate, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident, reported at 1:50 a.m., remains under investigation. Speed appears to have been a factor in the crash, according to a sheriff’s department press release.
