LeRoy M. Dunwald



LeRoy M. Dunwald, age 76, of Ontario, Wis., passed away on Monday, May 11, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born June 10, 1932, to LeRoy and Viva (Maxwell) Dunwald on the family farm in the Jefferson Township, Monroe County, Wis. He attended Upper Brush Creek School.

He was united in marriage to Lora Skarda on June 12, 1954. LeRoy and Lora moved to Waukegan, Ill., where he worked at Deepfreeze in North Chicago, Ill., from 1952-1956, then at Johns-Manville in Waukegan, Ill., from 1956-1964.

In 1964, he opened his own service station a Sinclair Gas Station in Kenosha, Wis., which he ran until retirement in 1985. He and Lora were happy to move back to the Ontario area when they built a new home after retirement. It was then that he opened up his shop again, and ran it until his son moved back to the area to take over. LeRoy enjoyed hunting, working on his old cars, fixing things, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren. He was also a member of the Viroqua Eagles.

He is survived by his wife, Lora of Ontario; four children, June (Frank) Randle of Norwalk, James (Pam) Dunwald of St. Mary’s Ridge, Janice (Marty) Ownbey of Spartenburg, S.C. and Janet (Ran-dy) Rothrock of Day-ton, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren; sisters, Ella Mae Mason of Plant City, Fla. and Joyce (John) Downing of Norwalk; and a brother, Harvey Dunwald of Ontario; many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy and Viva; a brother, Lyall Dunwald; and a sister, Lavina Moen.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 16, 2009, at the Community Baptist Church in Ontario. Pastor Bruce Milleman officiated. Burial followed in the Home Cemetery. Family and friends were invited for visitation on Friday evening, May 15, 2009, at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Ontario. Family and friends are also invited for visitation on Saturday before the time of services at the church.

The Torkelson Funeral Home of Ontario assisted the family with arrangements.

Clifton L. Bekkedal Sr.



Clifton L. Bekkedal Sr., age 85, of Westmont, Ill., beloved husband of the late Lora May nee Jerousek (2001), loving father of Clifton L. Jr. (fiancee Lara Grund), Alan Lee (Cynthia) and Bruce L., cherished grandfather of Jennifer Marie (Jason) Brauer and Brian Alan.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 22, 2009, 9 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, 36 N. Grant St., Westmont, IL Visitation will be Thursday, May 21, 2009, 5-9 p.m. at Toon Funeral Home, 109 N. Cass Ave., Westmont, IL.

Gertrude W. Abelt



Gertrude W. Abelt, age 93, passed away at Vernon Manor in Viroqua, on Sunday, May 17, 2009.

She was born Nov. 15, 1915, in Willow Township, Richland County, to Walter and Hazel (Barnes) Jones. Gertrude married Fred Abelt on Dec. 24, 1936, in Dubuque, Iowa. They spent their lives farming until 1984, when they retired. Gertrude was preceded in death by Fred in December 2005.

She will be missed by their three daughters, Bonnie (Harry) Shird of Waukesha, Wis., Carolyn (Chris) Burton of Reno, Nev. and Lorita (Dennis) Hollenbeck of Rockford, Ill.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, along with many friends.

In addition to Fred and her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Leland Jones; and her stepfather, Mike Foreman.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 22, 2009, at noon at the La Farge Free Methodist Church in La Farge. Pastor George Shick will officiate. Burial will be in the Viola Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday at the church after 11 a.m. The Vosseteig Funeral Home’s Henthorn Memorial Center of Viola is serving the family.

Charles Alan “Chuck” Holman



Charles Alan “Chuck” Holman, age 58, of Acworth, Ga., died Thursday, May 14, 2009, in Georgia.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy W. Holman of Acworth, Ga.; sons, Christopher Scott Holman of Great Fall, Mont., Daniel Lee Holman of Kennesaw, Ga., James Eugene Cox of Marietta, Ga. and Brendan Colby Slaney of Acworth, Ga.; daughter, Kerri Hackling of Snellville, Ga.; sister, Susan Linda Tougas of Roswell, Ga.; brothers, Robert Stephen Holman of Beaumont, Calif., and Stuart Taylor Holman of Sarasota, Fla.; grandchildren, Lillian Holman, Dylan Cox, Grace Cox, Sara Cox and Peyton Stone Hackling; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 18, 2009, from the Chapel of Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw, Ga. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Coon Prairie Cemetery, rural Westby.

Esther Cade



Esther Cade, age 91 of Viroqua, died Tuesday morning, May 12, 2009, at Norseland Nursing Home, Westby.

She was born on April 14, 1918, in Coon Valley to Albert and Josephine (Johnson) Sagmoen.

On April 18, 1942, Esther married Perry Cade in Westby. The couple farmed in the Coon Valley area until 1960, when they moved to Viroqua and farmed until 1976. Esther babysat for many families in the Viroqua and Westby area. She enjoyed baking, making lefse and homemade doughnuts. Her love of quilting filled many hours of her days and each family member has a quilt to remember her by. She enjoyed spending time with friends, family and her grandchildren. In 1980, Esther saw her need of a personal relationship with Christ and trusted Him as her Lord and Savior.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Esther is survived by her daughter, Marlene (David) Fauske of Viroqua; grandchildren, Trulla (Mike) Zietlow of Viroqua, Tammy (Steve) Halverson of Watertown and Kevin (Jesi) Fauske of Chetek; great-grandchildren, Janelle (Jordan) Saffert, Stephanie (Rob) Johnson, Ryan and Tyler Zietlow, Danielle (Manny) Martinez, Cortney, Andrew and Nikki Halverson and Tanner and Molli Fauske; great-great-granddaughter, Vianika Mar-tinez; brother, Verlyn Sagmoen; two sisters, Jolene Deaver and Verna (Joseph) Bakkum; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Perry Cade on Aug. 7, 1976; four brothers, Lloyd Joseph, in infancy, Lloyd, Archie and Otis; and three sisters, Alice Engh, Marian Iverson and Jeannette Hanson.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 15, 2009, at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua. Officiating at the service was Pastor Roy Tellier and Pastor Kathy Ingbritsen. Trulla Zietlow and Kevin Bitz were the vocalists, and Marilyn Bitz was the pianist. Casket bearers were Kevin Fauske, Mike Zietlow, Steve Halverson, Ryan Zietlow, Tyler Zietlow and Andrew Halverson. Burial took place in the Viroqua Cemetery. Visitation was held on Thursday evening, May 14, 2009, at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home in Viroqua and again at the funeral home on Friday prior to the service.

Ruth A. Zimmermann



Ruth A. Zimmermann, age 90 of Viroqua, died Monday, May 11, 2009, at the Bethel Home in Viroqua.

She was born on May 15, 1918, in Chicago, Ill., to Francis and Isabelle (Hoyle) Sahm. In July of 1938, Ruth married John Zimmermann and they lived in Chicago until moving to Arlington Heights in 1972. Helen, their only child, was born in July of 1939, and died in the summer of 1984. Ruth’s husband, John died in 1987. Ruth moved to Viroqua in 2000 to be near family and lived at Maplewood Terrace until she became a resident of the Bethel Home in 2003. Ruth was a meticulous homemaker and she enjoyed cooking and baking. She loved flowers, especially roses, which were on display in her yard. Ruth also did lovely needlework.

Ruth is survived by nephews, Richard (Patricia) Rubasch of Viroqua, Anthony Rubasch of Viroqua and William (Mary Jo) Rubasch of Tucson, Ariz.; her brother Ray’s sons, Raynel and Dick Hoyle; many great-and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; daughter, Helen; two sisters, Gertrude and Belle; and two brothers, Ray and Frankie.

A Mass of Christian Burial was on Monday, May 18, 2009, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Viroqua. Father Robert J. Cook celebrated the Mass. Burial was on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at St. Joseph Cemetery in River Grove, Ill. Friends called on Sunday afternoon with a rosary at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua. Friends also called at the church on Monday before the time of the services.

Alston P. Raaum



Alston P. Raaum, age 79 of Viroqua, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital.

He was born on Sept. 20, 1929, to Henry and Mildred (Aspenson) Raaum. He graduated from Viroqua High School in 1947. On Feb. 23, 1952, he married Elaine B. Alexander. Alston retired from dairy farming after 45 years and pursued a career in real estate. He was a lifetime member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and various committees. He was a member of the Lion’s Club and Men’s Chorus.

Alston is survived by his wife, Elaine; daughter, Cynthia Loomis of Viroqua; son, Karl Raaum of Milwaukee; two grandchildren, Erin and Erik Raaum of Milwaukee; sisters, Illa Mae (David) Moore of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. and Bonnie (Roger) Hanson of Indio, Calif.; relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and grandson, Timmy Loomis.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. The Rev. Lindsay Paul Jordan and the Rev. Margaret Eiben Hoversten officiated. Friends called at the church before the time of services.

There will be no individual thank-yous sent by Alston’s family. They wish to thank everyone for their gifts of memorials, flowers, thoughts and prayers for them at this difficult time upon Alston’s death.

Neil Silbaugh



Neil Silbaugh, age 75, of Soldiers Grove, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse.

He was born on Nov. 16, 1933, in Viroqua to Arnold and Helen (Olson) Silbaugh. He married Barbara D. Hirschfield on Dec. 5, 1959, and they farmed together in Soldiers Grove until he was called home. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Soldiers Grove; three children, Larry Silbaugh of Soldiers Grove, Greg (Rhonda) Silbaugh of Richland Center and Nancy (Danny) Hooverson of Readstown; two step-grandchildren, Bob and Chasity Werner; special friend, Ashley Bird; and one godson, Ricky Hadley Jr.,; four brothers and sisters, Carla McNertney of White Bear Lake, Minn., Donna (Dick) Meath of Hugo, Minn., Ronald (Mary) Silbaugh of Pine City, Minn. and Sandy (John) Doug-las of White Bear Lake, Minn.; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by parents; one brother-in-law, Don McNertney; and one nephew, Tom Douglas.

Private family graveside rites were held on Monday, May 18, 2009, at the Readstown Cemetery with the William A. Schoville Post #220 providing military rites. Friends were invited to a celebration of his life to be held at Kickapoo Corners Restaurant in Readstown from 2:30 until 6 p.m. Condolences may be sent to simefuneralforum.com.
