Authorities are investigating the drowning death of a 43-year-old Readstown man.
According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department, the body of Andrew G. Wallace was recovered from the Kickapoo River on Sunday night.
Vernon County Sheriff Gene Cary said that Wallace had been fishing. Investigators are still questioning witnesses, Cary said.
An autopsy was performed on Wallace’s body Monday at University Hospitals in Madison by a forensic pathologist from the state crime lab. Cary said the autopsy’s initial finding was that there was no trauma to the body and that the circumstance appears, pending completion of the investigation, to be “nothing other than a drowning.”
“We don’t know if alcohol was a factor, we can assume it was,” Cary said. “Alcohol and water don’t mix.”
Cary said more information would be available when the investigation is completed. Investigators were meeting to discuss the case and plan interviews Tuesday.
“We just want to make sure we cross all our ‘t’s’ and dot all our ‘i’s,’” he said.
Assisting in recovering Wallace’s body were the Readstown Police Depart-ment, Viola Dive and Rescue Team, Readstown and Viola fire departments and the Vernon County coroner.
The incident is being investigated by the Readstown Police Department and the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department.
